Google Pittsburgh Earns LEED Gold Building Certification!

Located in the former Nabisco Building on Penn Avenue since 2010, Google’s Pittsburgh headquarters has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for Interior Design and Construction.
The United States Green Building Council developed the LEED program to award buildings across various project types using a series of assessment categories such as Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality.
The award for Google Pittsburgh, the design of which was led by Strada, should not surprise those who are familiar with Google’s workplace philosophies. The company is known for prioritizing sustainability as well as employee comfort and health, and Strada was able to incorporate this into the design of the office.
Abundant natural light flooded the building before the renovation, so interior partitions and lighting were designed to maximize this asset. Sections of workstations enjoy separate mechanical and electrical controls so that people can control temperature and light based on their own microclimates, thus saving energy. Material-wise, the design team specified a range of products with recycled content, such as structural steel, carpeting, ceramic tile, and solid surface countertops. Day-to-day recycling for Google employees was planned to be simple and centralized in order to further reduce the material footprint of the office.

Green Building Features of Bakery Square Nabisco Building

Bakery Square is proud to be green!

Certification Information
LEED Certification
Certification Status: Certified
Rating System: LEED for Core & Shell (LEED-CS)
Certification Level: Certified
Certification Year: 2010

Project Overview
The building is a new multi-use lifestyle center created on a previously developed brownfield site. It includes office and retail space, as well as a seven-story suite hotel with majority underground parking.

Key Green Features

Adaptive Reuse, Brownfield Redevelopment, Certified Wood, Green Power Purchased, Historic Preservation, Local Materials, Native Landscaping, Photovoltaic Array, Salvaged Materials

Sustainable Sites
Brownfield redevelopment was achieved through remediation of asbestos in existing building. Multiple bus transit line are available within 1/4 mile of the site. Combined vegetated open space and pedestrian oriented hardscape accounts for over 23% of the entire site. Low flow fixtures will be installed in base building res rooms. Currently, the building is estimating greater than 30% potable water use reduction. A drip irrigation system and drought resistant plants have been selected to achieve a 50% potable water use reduction for irrigation needs.

Energy & Atmosphere
A grant from Pennsylvania’s Energy Harvest is funding a 75kW solar array on the 7-story roof. The building has a central water source heat pump system for heating and cooling the building. There are plans to purchase Green Power to account for at least 70% of core and shell electricity consumption over a period of two years.

Material & Resources
Maintaining at least 50% of existing walls, floors, and roof. They are targeting 75% construction waste diversion. More than 10% of contect will be recycled as well as regional materials. More than 50% of lumber will be certified wood. Masonry from demolition is being salvaged, used, and reused as on-site fill.

Happy 4th of July!

“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness.  You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.”
-Erma Bombeck

We wish everyone a Happy 4th of July!
