Bakery Square helping East Liberty go green

Kevin Driscoll has no physical infirmity, and he obviously never will be pregnant.

But when Driscoll visits Bakery Square in East Liberty, he quickly can grab a designated parking space that would get most people towed if they took it. Such are the benefits of driving a "green" vehicle.

"It's kind of a nice reward," said Driscoll, 44, an information technology consultant from McCandless who has owned a hybrid Toyota Prius for the past five years.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

We want to wish all our fans a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  Check out the link below for some fun St. Patricks’s Day facts:

St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The actual color of St. Patrick is blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow.

Fresh Baked Goods: CMU’s Master of Fine Arts exhibition opens at Bakery Square on March 26

Presented by Future Tenant, Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Art, and Bakery Square, Fresh Baked Goods showcases new site-specific work by first and second year CMU Master of Fine Art students. The exhibition will occupy vacant space on the first and second floors of the Bakery Square complex in Pittsburgh’s East End neighborhood: a newly renovated former Nabisco Factory, which is now home to Google, among others. The show opens March 26 with a free reception from 5-8pm, a Performance Night on April 1 from 5-8pm, and concludes April 8 from 7pm-12am in conjunction with Future Tenant’s annual fundraiser bash, SUGAR FACTORY.

Curated by Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Center for the Arts resident curator Adam Welch, Fresh Baked Goods features artwork that, according to Welch, reflects the nature of “baked goods” by being “created in a relatively short period of time through a state of flux, reaction, combustion or synthesis; and existing for a short period of time, with temporal elements that also create something in their own moment of being.”

Adapted into the landscape of the massive construct of Bakery Square, Fresh Baked Goods is a-large scale and interactive art showcase. The MFA students specifically selected and developed artwork that would allow them to explore this unique exhibition space.

Artists are Nina Sarnelle, Agnes Bolt, Oscar Peters, Jonathan Armistead, Sung Rok Choi, Jesse England, Riley Harmon, Erin Womack, Felipe Castelblanco, Steve Gurysh, Craig Fahner, Scott Andrew, Dan Wilcox and Luke Loeffler.

Fresh Baked Goods will be open to the public from March 26 until April 8, with gallery hours Wednesday-Friday 5-8pm and Saturday 1-4pm. The Performance Night on Friday, April 1, 5-8pm coincides with the “Unblurred” Gallery Crawl and First Fridays on Penn Avenue. The closing reception and SUGAR FACTORY fundraiser on Friday, April 8 from 7pm-12am features local DJs, VJs, performances and an art auction. Fundraiser tickets can be purchased at www.sugrfactry.com.

Bakery Square’s new mixed-use development is located in the East End neighborhood of Pittsburgh, built from the existing site of the historic Nabisco Factory. Offering an exciting lifestyle center environment while hosting numerous free events to connect with its neighbors and guests, Bakery Square is home to Google, UPMC, Anthropologie, Free People, Learning Express, Urban Active Fitness, Coffee Tree Roasters, a Marriott SpringHill Suites Hotel and more. Bakery Square is a joint venture of Pittsburgh based Walnut Capital and the RCG Longview Fund from NY.

CMU’s School of Art encourages experimentation and hybrid practices as well as the history and traditions of art. The three-year Master of Fine Arts degree, ranked #1 in multi-media by US News & World Report, produces self-defined artists of exceptional ability and initiative who are able to connect meaningfully with the communities and cultures around them.

Future Tenant is a non-profit art space located in downtown Pittsburgh at 819 Penn Avenue dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging artists through exhibitions that offer a cutting edge perspective on the Pittsburgh art scene.

Daylight Savings Time Begins on March 13

Daylight savings time is coming up this weekend.  Don’t forget to set your clocks forward!

Every year, daylight savings time seems to take people by surprise. In the United States, daylight savings time begins on March 13 at 2 a.m. local time except in parts of Arizona and Hawaii. As the popular saying goes, clocks need to "spring forward" to observe the change. In other words, clocks need to be set ahead by one hour when the clock strikes 2 a.m.

Spring 2011 Trends from Free People!

Don’t miss out on the latest trend for this spring.  There are lots of exciting options to use the hi-low helmines.  Read all about it on the Free People blog and try on your favorite hi-low helmine skirts and dresses at Free People in Bakery Square!

Whoever knew the hem line could be this adventurous. The spring 2011 big trend is the hi-low silhouette, and we are huge fans!

We love the peek-a-boo factor that this look gives, a great way to show off your lovely shoes and a little bit of your leg when spring hits. It’s a look that’s making a romantic comeback from the 70’s in a new modern way. Play around with the look and add a little petticoat or slip to make it slightly more dramatic.
